Samaná

Like a large canvas of palm forests, intense blue beaches and white sands, Samaná showcases an almost unexplored tropical landscape that makes it one of the most interesting tourist destinations in the Caribbean region.

Its soil, covered with white, pink, green and gray marble, reminiscent of the Cretaceous period, is one of its richer mining resources. Every year, from January to March, humpback whales flee from the Arctic regions to procreate and care for their offspring in the coasts of Samaná.

As soon as you reach the city, you can see “Cayo Levantado” against the coastline, which, surrounded by very calm, blue and green waters, marks the perfect contrast with the white sand that borders the islet.

Las Terrenas and Las Galeras are, together with the city of Samaná, the most attractive places in the province that make Bahía de Samaná a momentous historical enclave. When Christopher Columbus decided to return to Spain to inform about his findings to the Catholic monarchs, he discovered Bahía de Samaná, where the first skirmishes between the natives and the Spaniards took place in the New World. The place was called Golfo de las Flechas.

The joint work of natives and foreigners in Las Terrenas resulted in a small tourist city in which small hotels and cottages characterize the excellent quality of the hotel offer.

You can see countless pictographs and petroglyphs in the caverns.

The province offers diverse views, from beautiful beaches such as Las Terrenas, El Limón, Portillo and Rincón, to ecological getaways in ecotourism projects such as Eco Campo La Sangría, Clave Verde, Tree Houses, or Chalet Tropical.

Samaná also offers interesting excursions for whale watching, bird watching, visits to mangroves and to caves with rock paintings.

Did you know? The northern coast of the Samaná peninsula is within the protected area called Reserva Científica Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos Banco de La Plata y Navidad. The 30^th anniversary of this marine sanctuary was celebrated in 2016.

There is an “iguanario” on the way to Las Galeras, in a place called Los Tocones, where you can go and feed the iguanas. And, in that same route, there is a community where you can learn how cocoa is processed.
