Madrid, Spain, February 25, 2019 – The Dominican Ministry of Culture, through its Office in Madrid, sponsored this past Saturday, February 23, the celebration of the Dominican Carnival in the Spanish capital.
The event was part of the various activities held by the Office in Spain to celebrate Dominican Month, which began on the Day of the Virgin of La Altagracia and ended on February 27, National Independence Day.
The Carnival was held in the Municipal Auditorium of the Madrid neighborhood of La Moncloa. Hundreds attended the event, where they enjoyed the music of various well-known Dominican artists, as well as the dances and colorful costumes that characterize the Dominican carnaval festivities.
The nation of Honduras was invited to participate in the event.
Although the celebration of the Dominican Carnival in Madrid was suspended in 2012 for security reasons, this year the Ministry of Culture – along with the Dominican Consulate General, the Institute of Dominicans Abroad – and civil society representatives such as Ronny del Carmen, owner of the disco “Sueño Latino” and other event organizers such as artist Hamlet Ramírez and social activist Carolina Carrasco.
The cultural program was organized by the Administration of Minister of Culture Architect Eduardo Selman – and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – following instructions issued by President Danilo Medina to carry out activities that will bring the Dominican diaspora together.
The Director of Culture in Madrid, Jonathan Gómez, headed the initiative and worked with representatives of the Dominican community to meet the guidelines established by the Dominican Executive Office.
