The Colorful Life of “Cambumbo,” a Popular Dominican Actor and Musician, Will be Taken to the Stage

Santo Domingo, February 12, 2020 – During a recent press conference held at the National Theater, the producer, director and actors announced the upcoming play “Cambumbo,” based on the life story of one of the Dominican Republic’s most colorful musicians and theater personality: Tony Echavarría.

Produced by Raúl Méndez and co-produced by Lulú Ceballos, in what is her first theater production, and directed by Ramón Santana, the play is based on the life of “Cambumbo.” The play was written by Franklin Soto, who is also the play’s lead star, and adapted to the stage by Ramón Santana.

Soto explained during the press conference that the play honors this Dominican actor, known in the country for his vaudeville-like performances in the 1980s.

A moving moment for actor Franklin Soto was when he spoke of the untimely death of “Cambumbo.” The anecdotes regarding the life of Cambumbo soon followed when Dominican journalists and art critics Napoleón Beras and Joseph Cáceres told some interesting stories about the life and times of “Cambumbo.”

The innovative play will incorporate videos, interviews with friends and colleagues who knew and worked with Tony Echavarría.

The play is scheduled to open on February 21 at the Juan Lockward Bar, in Santo Domingo’s National Theater. The play is sponsored by Café de Toi (La Resistencia), La Zarina, Restaurante Il Cappuccino and Parada 77.
