Santo Domingo to Host the First International Energy Week

Santo Domingo will host the First International Energy Week (SEIDE, Spanish acronym), organized by the National Energy Commission along with some 30 other public and private institutions working in conjunction with international technical and cooperation organizations.

This event will bring together government ministers from the energy sector, chancellors, high government representatives, scientists, experts, business people and investors such as international development and cooperation organizations with the purpose of agreeing on a policy of exchange and interchange about the global energy situation and to come up with ideas about new sources of energy. Their goal is also to motivate politicians to take action, facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge and to promote business opportunities in the area of energy thus contributing to the search for viable energy solutions that will have lower environmental impact on a national, regional and global level.

This activity came about as a response to the need to renew and diversify energy generation sources, the demand for which increases daily.

Objectives

1. To promote the use of sustainable natural resources, the development of renewable energy and to define the role of Mechanisms for Clean Development (MCD) of the Kyoto Protocol.

2. To examine the potential of the MCD for sustainable development in the Dominican Republic

3. To contribute to the search for viable and environmentally low impact solutions to energy problems.

4. To promote and exchange ideas and to share national experiences.

5. To facilitate a space open to the general public for discussion and negotiation about possible applicable solutions.

6. To promote business opportunities in the energy and transport sector.

Inauguration

President of the Republic, Leonel Fernández, attended the inauguration on Monday of the working sessions of the First International Energy Week.

President Fernández felt certain that the character of the event will send a clear message about the importance of energy in the Dominican Republic and he added that the government is promoting various technological initiatives with the idea of generating savings, efficiency and, most of all, decreasing carbon monoxide emissions, according to a press release from the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

The President said that within 60 days, a chip to measure the use of natural gas in all vehicles will be ready for installation at various stations. It was earlier thought that the chip would be available for installation at 40 stations. He explained that this project will be the responsibility of private companies without any government monetary investment.
