National Youth Prize Awarded to Dean of Philosophy Department at Columbia University The Secretary of State for Youth Affairs awarded the winners of the 12th annual National Youth Prizes for the year 2007. Those who received recognition included young Dominicans living here in the country as well as abroad. Awards conferred upon the winners were based on outstanding academic achievement or community service. The awards ceremony was overseen by President Leonel Fernández and First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández. Rooselvelt Montás, native of San Cristobal and now a US resident, received the National Grand Prize for his role as Dean of the Philosophy Department at Columbia University in New York. In the area of communication, the Esquina Joven, or Young Person’s Corner, of the newspaper Hoy, was awarded. The prize was received by businessman José Luis Corripio and journalist Fernando Quiroz. In the area of sports, weight-lifter, Yudelkis Contreras, won recognition. Other award winners included: Alberto Lluberes in the area of cultural development and Glennys Isabel Hernández won the Student Merit Award. Awards were also bestowed upon Crucito Valle Restituyo, Pablo Vicente, Aldania Restituyo Marte, Alberto Sayas Coronado, Zahira Feliz Polanco in the areas of Service and Rural Leadership, Contribution to Human Rights, Development and Business Expansion in the Community, Contribution to the Culture of Peace and Social Services, respectively. The ceremony took place in the Cariátides Hall of the National Palace in the presence of hundreds of young people, special guests and government officials.
