President of the Republic Explains Economy and Announces Multi-million Dollar Investments Speaking before the National Assembly in commemoration of Independence Day, Dominican President Leonel Fernández gave a traditional speech in which he clarified the country’s economic situation and enumerated the achievements of his mandate in such areas as the economy, tourism, education, health, environment, public works and institutional development. During his 2-hour speech, President Fernández announced, among other things, millions of dollars in investments, both local as well as international.…an electric generating plant and an ethanol-producing plant with investments of up to $500 million dollars. Fernández explained that the Vicini and the Central Romana Groups will undertake the construction of a sugar mill, an electric generating plant and an ethanol-producing plant with investments of up to $500 million dollars. The president also added that Canadian company, Barrick Gold Corporation, intends to invest some $2.6 billion dollars in a project to excavate the mines in Pueblo Nuevo, in the province of Sánchez Ramírez.
