First Asian Food Festival The Ministry of Tourism sponsored the First Asian Food Festival held in conjunction with the Flower for Everyone Foundation and representatives from the People’s Republic of China in the Dominican Republic. “the enthusiastic participation signals that this event should be institutionalized and held every year as a way of fomenting knowledge of Asian cooking… Throughout the celebration, certificates and prizes were awarded to various Chinese and Korean restaurants and cooks in five different categories: Meat, Poultry, Fish, Shellfish, Vegetables and, additionally, green vegetables and other dishes. The festival was held in the Bella Cristal Restaurant which won three prizes in different categories. According to the organizers, “the enthusiastic participation signals that this event should be institutionalized and held every year as a way of fomenting knowledge of Asian cooking to the great delight of the Dominicans and foreigners who visit Chinatown in our country.” The jury was made up of distinguished Chinese and Dominican personalities. Among the winning restaurants were: Día a Día (Day by Day), The New Jade Palace, Bella Cristal, Grand China, Asadero Chino (Chinese Roast), Mana and the Beijing Express (Expreso Pekin). Chinatown will be the scene each year of this type of celebration in keeping with the work being done by the Flower for Everyone Foundation.
