Young filmmaker, Camilo Then, announced that he is making his third documentary and it is called “Norman de Castro: Life with HIV.”


The film will show the story of the late Dominican doctor who dedicated his research to various illnesses and was considered the father of the Dominican hematology studies…


The film will show the story of the late Dominican doctor who dedicated his research to various illnesses and was considered the father of the Dominican hematology studies and a pioneer in HIV-AIDS research in the DR.

To tell the complete story of this prominent physician, Then is filming scenes in Seibo, where Norman de Castro was born, as well as locations in Santo Domingo.

This film, which will be shown in the beginning of August, recognizes Dr. Norman de Castro as an important physician and representative of the DR on an international level, said the Minister of Public Health and head of the Board of Directors for the Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS.

Camilo Then has become well-known in recent years for his documentaries on social issues in the DR.

The team that works with Then films, Camilo Then’s production is called Atabey Productions which also worked in post production. The script and research was done by Odalis Castillo and the camera operated by Robin Paredes. Production and coordination was done by Manuel Pagan and Leydis González respectively.

Camilo Then made the documentary “No Man’s Land” en 2006, which was about the Jimaní tragedy. In 2007, he filmed “Living with HIV.”

About Norman de Castro

At the beginning of the 80s, the figure of Norman de Castro was essential for the media, producers of TV and radio as he was the only person who provided information about HIV/AIDS directly to the people at a time when it was virtually unknown in most of the world.

Norman de Castro was a hematologist and a professor at the UASD for more than 30 years. He was a specialist in cancer treatment and the head of the Hematology Services Department at Padre Billini Hospital. He was also the director of the Institute of Blood where he practiced private medicine. In 1999 he was elected to be a member emeritus of the American Society of Hematology of the United States. He was president of the regional District of Dominican Medical Association, currently known as the Dominican Medical College.
