Dominican Designer Make a Splash with the Public at Miami Fashion Week

They could easily have been on the runways in Paris or Milan, was the public opinion of the Dominican fashion designers who recently participated in one of the most important fashion events in the United States: Miami Fashion Week 2009.

And it was the designs of Gutiérrez – Marcano, Cinthia Avelino, Damaris Rubio, Magaly Tiburcio, Cesar De Moya and Belkola, that most captivated and impressed the best known fashion critics as well as the public attending the event, reported the Press and Communication Office of the Ministry of Tourism.

It is worth pointing out what the Panamanian press wrote: “The maturity and quality were consistent and not one item was the same as another. In addition to the fact that they totally broke out of the concept that Caribbean style only expresses color and evocation in its artistry. Dominicans Damaris Rubio, Carlos de Moya, Cinthia Avelino, Gutiérrez Marcano, Magaly Tiburcio and Belkola demonstrated that their country is becoming a force in Latin American fashion,” according to the Panamanian newspaper Prensa.com.

The presentation of the artists began with the creations of the Gutiérrez – Marcano company, who showed their retrospective collection “Not Just Black,” characterized by pieces that are full of mystery, exoticism and strength where sophistication and eternal black express glamour and good taste.

The next designer to show her work was Cinthia Avelino who, inspired by a chic and vintage version of “Alice in Wonderland” showed her “Chic in Wonderland,” where she played with elements of the story applying details from the Queen of Hearts.

Following Avelino was Damaris Rubio, who at the end of the event won the prize for “Best Hispanic Designer 2009.”

Rubio filled the stage with colors and style, with cutting edge and modern designs for secure women, lovers of colors, elegance, form and above all, good taste.

After Rubio came Carlos De Moya who presented his collection, “Anda Miranda,” inspired by women with a keen sense of humor, protagonists of the most beautiful stories, lovers of colors and nature.

The show continued with Magali Tiburcio, who with the curiosity and natural gift demonstrated her passion for art, “to give the best of oneself in everything one does,” has become her slogan. This characteristic has turned her into a unique fashion designer. Of herself, she says, “in her universe there are no limits to the creation of unique pieces.”

Finally, the show closed with the young designer Belkola who presented suits with brushstroke designs in different tones, asymmetric designs, evening suits and combination pieces among others, all of which attracted a very impressed public.

The presentation of Dominican designers was supported by the Ministry of Tourism through the Department of Congresses and Incentives and the Miami Tourism Office as well as the Dominican Fashion organization and the Balcones del Atlántico Real Estate Company.

Miami Fashion Week 2009 was held at the Soho Studios in Miami, with the participation of the local society, young webpage publishers, models, fashion lovers and fashion critics and media from Dubai to Argentina.
