Low Cost Canteens Administration to Invest 3.9 Million Pesos to Build a Producer Dining Hall in Navarrete With an investment of 3.9 million pesos, the government’s General Administration of Low Cost Canteens began construction work on the new Producer Canteen in this city. The new canteen will have the capacity to prepare up to 5,000 meals cooked meals per day. …the project seeks to provide quality food at low prices to people with limited resources in the neighborhoods near Navarrete and other townships. Administrator of the social service project, Nicolás Calderón, broke ground in an act symbolizing the start of the project that will generate dozens of jobs in the community. The General Administration of the State Low Cost Canteens is fulfilling a mandate laid out by President Leonel Fernández, who instructed all social organizations to increase their presence in the vulnerable sectors of the country as a way of confronting the global economic downturn. The executive of the governmental organization sustained that the new producer canteen will have all the necessary backing to fulfill the food needs of the population as will the newly inaugurated canteen in the province of San Cristobal. Prior to the groundbreaking event, Calderón visited the Los Platanito canteen building which is being refurbished with a 2.7 million dollar investment. The remodeling of the canteen consists of removing all the paint and applying a waterproof coating on the roof, changing all the doors, window and other equipment that was totally damaged. In addition, Calderón headed up the distribution of thousands of cold as well as hot meals prepared in the institution’s new mobile kitchen which was set up in Navarrete’s Central Park. Hundreds of people came by to enjoy lunch. The cold meals were made with rice, beans, oil, spaghetti, sauce, garlic and spices among other ingredients. The cooked meals contained green beans, grilled chicken, and a green salad. Men, women, children and elderly people enjoyed the meals. The sectors of Santiago that benefitted from the food delivery included La Trinitaria, Navarrete Centro, Simón Bolívar, San Miguel, El Acueducto, La Altagracia, 27 de Febrero, Los Mejía, Manolo Tavárez Justo, La Plata, Duarte, La Mella, El Mercado, Los Pica Piedra, Los Cajuilitos, El Abanico and the Navarrete Country Club. Government and regional officials present at the groundbreaking with Calderón included the deputy administrator of the canteens in the Northern region, Ramón Antonio Jiménez; provincial Governor of Santiago, José Augusto Izquierdo; Camilo Bermúdez; the deputy director of the National Lottery, Santiago Vargas and the President of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in Navarrete, Cristino Peralta.
