On Friday, the Dominican Republic joined the international community’s immediate efforts to establish centers in Haitian territory for those whose homes were partially or totally destroyed by the earthquake, according to a press release from the Presidency,


For Haitian President René Preval, other important issues include the difficulty in coordinating the reception and distribution of international aid …


In a conversation between Presidents Leonel Fernández and René Preval and Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, at the MINUSTAH offices, the following priorities were established:

The rescue of victims and burial of dead in common graves.


  1. Restoration of telephone service.
  2. Restoration of electricity.
  3. Setting up of tents and hospitals to care for those in need, to be done in coordination with the Brazilian government.

For Haitian President René Preval, other important issues include the difficulty in coordinating the reception and distribution of international aid as well as not being able to provide quick rescue to people who are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.


President Preval also insisted on the construction of temporary housing, in Haitian territory, especially in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area where, as is already known, families most affected by the earthquake are concentrated.
