Driving License


PasaporteThose interested in obtaining a drivers license must fulfill the following requisites:



  • Possess an Identification Card and updated National or absentee Voter Registration Card
  • Demonstrate moral quality proven by obtaining a Certificate of Good Conduct from the National Police or corresponding legal authorities.
  • Undergo an eye examination and blood type tests to be carried out in the General Office of Land Transit (DGTT in Spanish) headquarters in Santo Domingo and in the interior of the country.
  • Display theoretical and practical knowledge of driving and driving laws by taking a written driving test which is given at the DGTT offices.
  • Provide receipts from the Banco de Reservas to prove that you have paid the taxes and fees necessary to obtain a driver’s license.

Required Documents


To obtain a learner’s permit



  • Identification Card and a updated National or absentee Voter Registration Card
  • Receipts from the Banco de Reservas verifying payment of taxes and services.
  • Eye examination and blood type tests done at the central and regional DGTT headquarters.
  • Proof of passage of the written, theoretical test given by the DGTT.

To Obtain Your First Driver’s License



  • Identification Card and a updated National or absentee Voter Registration Card
  • Receipt of payment made to Banco de Reservas corresponding to the fee for a Driver’s License.
  • A Learner’s Permit issued at least 45 days prior with at least one year left before expiration.
  • Proof of attendance at the Drivers Education class given at the central and regional headquarters of the General Office of Land Transit.
  • Certification of proof of having taken the Practical Test given by the DGTT.

To Renew a Driver’s License



  • Identification Card and updated National or absentee Voter Registration Card
  • Receipt from the Banco de Reservas verifying payment of taxes and services.
  • Proof of eye exam administered at the central or local DGTT offices.
  • Expired driver’s license.

Change of driving category



  • Identification Card and updated National or absentee Voter Registration Card
  • Driver’s license from the previous category issued at least one year prior.
  • Receipts from the Banco de Reservas verifying payment of taxes and services.
  • Proof of eye exam administered at the central or local DGTT offices.

To change from an official to civilian permit



  • Certification from the Secretary of the Armed Forces or the National Police validating the license being sought by the applicant
  • Communication from the corresponding military organization confirming that the applicant is no longer a member. 
  • A civilian identity card and voter registration card.
  • Certification of Good Conduct from the National Police or corresponding court system.
  • Proof of eye exam administered at the central or local DGTT offices.
  • Receipt from the Banco de Reservas verifying payment of taxes and services.

Change of Origin (from a foreign to a national driver’s license)



  • National ID card as a foreigner.
  • Certification from the Embassy or Consulate of the country of origin stating the validity of the applicant’s driving license, duly confirmed and legalized in the Dominican Foreign Ministry
  • Proof of eye exam administered at the central or local DGTT offices.
  • Receipt from the Banco de Reservas verifying payment of taxes and services.

Where can all of these procedures be carried out?


In Santo Domingo: Central Office of the Land Transit Office, the Churchill Multi-Center Module and the surrounding modules set up for this purpose.


In the interior of the country: Regional offices are located in Santiago, San Francisco de Macorís, Puerto Plata, La Romana and Azua.
(The regional Land Transit offices in the interior of the country operate in the same headquarters as the Ministry of Public Works except in the case of La Romana where it functions in the Provincial Government Office.)

Note: Driver’s Licenses are valid for four (4) years beginning from their date of issuance and the Magazine of Motor Vehicles is valid for one year from the time of its issuance.


Driver’s Licenses are classified in categories, according to the type of vehicle being used by the applicant:



  • Category I: Motor vehicles, 
  • Category II: Light vehicles
  • Category III: Heavy vehicles

    • Mini-bus carrying up to 40 passengers and trucks with 2 axles
    • Busses carrying more than 60 passengers, semi trailers and trucks with more than 2 axles

  • Category V is for operators of heavy specialized equipment (cement mixers, land levelers, retro-excavation machines, etc.)
