The closing ceremony was presided over by Bernarda Jorge, Deputy Minister of Creativity and Popular Participation. She was accompanied by Jesús Joaquín Benito, Director of the Cultural Center of Spain; Freddy Ginebra, Festival advisor and Karina Noble, Director of National and International Theater Festivals, who delivered the keynote speech of the evening.

“Today we are closing this ten-day celebration, this dizzying, exciting fiesta. We had the novel addition of Spain this year as the guest of honor as well as the expansion of theater venues and performances in the provinces of Bonao, Moca and Monte Plata. We enjoyed the presence of ten countries, representing 21 groups who paraded on our streets and graced our theater halls. We can say with certainty that this was the most successful Theaters Festival ever held in this country,” said Karina Noble.

Ms. Noble pointed out that 91 performances were held and attended by 20,000 people throughout the Festival. In addition, 180 people participated in 12 workshops, 2 Master Classes, 15 roundtable discussions and a critical forum that provoked interesting debates.

At the closing event, the public was treated to the play, “Cientos de pájaros te impiden andar” (Hundreds of Bird Impede You from Walking), put on by the Spanish theater company, Teatro Abrego. The play describes the confrontation over rigid values that become laws and the useless, bloody struggle of someone who, belonging to that society, puts up with them while struggling to maintain a shred of individual freedom.
