Free Food Service Helping out Victims of Irene – Investment Exceeds 21 Million Dominican Pesos

State-run Economic Food Kitchens have invested more than 21 million pesos in the distribution of cooked and uncooked food to the communities affected by the rising rivers, streams and gullies as a result of the torrential rain that accompanied the arrival of Irene in the Dominican Republic.

Under instructions from President Leonel Fernández, Nicolás Calderón, as general administrator of the Economic Food Kitchens, confirmed that the organization would continue to provide food assistance to the thousands of displaced and isolated families…

Under instructions from President Leonel Fernández, Nicolás Calderón, as general administrator of the Economic Food Kitchens, confirmed that the organization would continue to provide food assistance to the thousands of displaced and isolated families in the various zones around the country.

During the food distribution operations in the provinces of San José de Ocoa and Azua, Mr. Calderón said the organization handed out more than 250,000 cooked meals and some 22,000 uncooked servings of food rations throughout the entire country following Irene.

Calderón said that he went to these areas in the southern part of the country under directions drawn up by President Leonel Fernández, “to help with basic food products needed by residents in neighborhoods and marginal communities in this region of the country.”

During the operation, the state-run Economic Food Kitchens handed out thousands of boxes containing rice, beans, oil, salsa, liquid sazón, spaghetti, pica pica and garlic paste, among other cooking products needed for the flood victims so that they were able to cook for several days.

Meals and food are being delivered, said Calderón, to El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Puerto Plata, Bonao, Nagua, Samaná, Azua, San José de Ocoa and San Cristóbal. He added that they will continue to provide food and cooking ingredients wherever there are displaced or otherwise affected people throughout the country.
