The installations at Culture Plaza, venue of the XV International Book Fair, Santo Domingo 2012, was the scene of the “Walk for the Rescue of Values,” promoted by the Office of the First Lady (DPD in Spanish) and a group of young leaders interested in the future of their country.

More than 500 young people from “Young Leaders for Progress and Peace,” the “Forum from the Dominican Children’s Library” and the Office of the First Lady were encouraging people at the Book Fair to support the values that form part of this important campaign.

“Don´t tarnish our values,” “Return my values,” “I have a right to my values, “I say yes to values,” “Our Society Needs Values,” “Values Help Citizens Grow” “Values Make Us Better People,” “I Love Values” were some of the messages seen on posters carried by the young people while others carried umbrellas with messages about the National Campaign for a Society with Values. Good for You!

The walk kicked off at 4:00 in the afternoon from the front of the Museum of the Dominican Man. As it advanced it was joined by children, young people and adults who were in agreement with the message of the marchers. The walk ended in the pavilion of the Office of the First Lady where they sang songs about the campaign.

The young people involved in programs sponsored by the Office of the First Lady (DPD in Spanish), directed by Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, coordinated their participation in the Book Fair to show this population´s concern about the lack of values and the importance of rescuing them.

In October 2010, the Office of the First Lady, undertook a National strategy for a society with values, known as ¡Bien por ti! (Good for you) in which she outlined the DPD’s vision and mission as it seeks to impact and incentivize the Dominican nation in its goal of rescuing the moral, patriotic and spiritual values that characterize it.

The main objective of the Bien por ti! campaign is to promote a culture of good behavior and interaction among the populace on a family, social, political and economic level. It also seeks to encourage the educational system to achieve the formation and promotion of educational programs that promote values among children, adolescents and young adults through churches, social movements, trade unions, universities and non-governmental organizations, among others.

With this strategy, the Office of the First Lady seeks to revive in the Dominican community the call for a better future as a country and as a nation.

The values that conform with this strategy are: honesty, responsibility, solidarity, social justice, love of neighbor, faith, hope, humility, peace, integrity, tolerance, dignity and respect. To learn more and to see more details about the campaign, please visit our webpage at: www.bienporti.org.
