The Walk for Life Foundation, part of SID Group, was welcomed by the Organization of United Nations as a model initiative for socially responsible investment in its Regional Support Center for Latin America and the Caribbean.

As such, the Walk for Life Foundation forms part of 32 initiatives chosen out of 114 presented from Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

The SID Group and its Walk for Life Foundation will form part of the publication of principles for social investment: Experiences of Participants of the World Pact in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Prior to this publication of the 32 social responsibility initiatives, the document was presented at the Rio +20 Corporate Sustainability Forum on the Reconceptualization of Business panel, jointly organized by the Regional Center, the Office of Principles for Social Investment of Australia (PSIS) and the Office of World Pact.

The official event to introduce this initiative, will take place on August 16 in Bogota, Colombia, with representatives from each initiative who, within the framework of this issue, will present detailed cases of social investment and its impact in their regions.

The Walk for Life Foundation is a channel through which the SID Group supports the institutions that work for the prevention and treatment of cancer in the Dominican Republic. These past five years, Walk for Life Foundation has donated more than $70 million Dominican pesos by collecting funds through the walk and activities supported and organized by the Foundation.

These funds have been donated to institutions that collaborate in the prevention and treatment of cancer. For us, the major contribution has been to raise awareness of the illness and to support us in expressing solidarity among Dominicans who, with their steps, have made this help possible.

Walk for Life has become a main activity of social welfare in the Dominican Republic but, in reality, it is more than a huge activity that generates millions of pesos in funds for institutions that work with cancer patients. It has become an act of solidarity and support for people who suffer from this illness; it has become a celebration of life for survivors and a triumph for the unity of the thousands of people who refuse to give up hope and who join together to make a strong front in the face of this mortal enemy: cancer.
