Also present, in addition to the President of the Olympic Committee, were: COD secretary, Antonio Acosta; ex-president of the COD and Dr. José Joaquín Puello, among others. “We are very happy to visit New York City and spend time with the Dominican athletic community here. We are working on plans of restructuring our sports agencies and, above all, getting to know their ideas with the aim of pushing them forward in the name of the athletic community via the Olympic Committee, which is the national strategy for developing sports in the Dominican Republic,” said the athletic director. Luisin Mejía, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, touched on several sports-related topics in the discussion and introduced spokesperson Wilfredo Soriano as the COD’s website correspondent. The website is a place where athletes have the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions with other athletes, on a local and state-wide level. He explained that the webpage gives athletes abroad the opportunity to post their most recent activities, statistics, records and it provides them with a resource to seek sponsorship which will allow them to continue developing their athletic skills. Mr. Mejía explained the reasons why Dominican athletic associations don’t have the right to vote in Olympic Committee elections. He also explained how associations abroad have the right to participate in the sporting activities and federations of this type. Other topics relating the world of sports were also discussed. Following the discussion, prominent figures of Dominican sports headed over to the Nuevo Restaurant Caridad, whose owner said he was very proud to have such prestigious athletic leaders at his restaurant.
