With the slogan “Una Mirada a Tus Valores” (A Look to Your Values), the Office of the Vice President of the Republic announced the opening of the Second National Youth Photo Competition for Values, an initiative that seeks to stimulate, assess and instill the development of the visual arts in future generations. The rules of the competition were announced by the Director of Socio-Cultural Projects in the Office of the Vice President, Teresa Peralta, and by the Coordinator of the competition, Leo Batista. They are part of the organizing committee that is chaired by the Vice President of the Republic and Coordinator of the Office of Social Policies, Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández. The announcement was made during a ceremony that took place in the Auditorium Gallery of the Museum of Modern Art, located in the Plaza de la Cultura “Juan Pablo Duarte”, in the framework of the XVII International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2014. With this competition, which is part of the National Strategy for a Society with Values, Good for you, your values make the country better! (¡Bien por ti, tus valores hacen un mejor país!), youth are provided with a space to nurture and direct their artistic development and design, and to promote and disseminate the values and ethical principles through artistic creativity and expression. Rules of the Competition Each participant must submit one or two photographs, properly identified through a pseudonym chosen by the artist. According to the organizers of the competition, only photographs that are inspired by one or more of the thirteen values ??promoted by the “Good for You” strategy, which are Social Justice, Honesty, Responsibility, Solidarity, Love of Neighbor, Faith, Hope, Humility, Peace, Integrity, Tolerance, Dignity and Respect, will be accepted. Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years, and they must be either Dominican nationals or foreigners who have resided in the country for at least five years. About the participating works The organizers of the competition have indicated that they will accept only unpublished photographs, in either analog or digital formats, that have not been presented at public exhibitions or earlier public or private competitions, inside or outside the country, and which have been taken no more than one year prior to this announcement. Also, they are required to be professionally executed and have artistic quality. There are three categories in the competition: Black and White Photography, Color Photography, and Creative Photography based on Special Effects. The format will range from at least 8 x 10 inches to a maximum of 22 x 24 inches. Photos should be reinforced with cardboard or other rigid support (Foam Board) and presented unframed. They should be delivered in high resolution (300 dpi) and in digital format (CD). A new category called “Values ??2014” will make its debut in this second edition, to allow participation through the social media platforms. For this digital category the format and the style are free. In this regard, Teresa Peralta explained that in this new category photos taken with mobile phones and digital cameras may also participate. They should be sent to social networks, to the Instagram account of the Office of the Vice President of the Republic (@ViceRDo, and through the hashtag #NuestrosValores2014. The general public may cast a vote for the photos they deem worthy of a special award, which has been called “Audience Award”. “Ideally, to have a good picture that can be entered into the competition with high quality, contestants should try to take pictures using the best camera within their reach,” Peralta said. In addition, at the time of the submission of entries, participants must accompany a form that must contain a summary of their updated resume in Word format and a copy of their identity and voter’s card. The awards The organizing committee announced that the winners of the first place will receive a prize of RD$50,000; the second place will receive RD$30,000, and the third place will receive RD$20,000. Also, there will be three honorable mentions, each receiving a prize of RD$10,000, and an “Audience Award”, which will receive a camera, among other prizes.
