Santo Domingo, July 2, 2015

The renowned international company, TripAdvisor has recognized the Alcázar de Colón Museum of the Dominican Republic with a “Certification of Excellence” for 2015, as a result of outstanding guest reviews.

Raysa Astacio, Director of the Alcázar de Colón Museum, said this recognition can only be obtained thanks to the excellent opinions received through one of the best travel sites in the world.

“This award comes in the name of all the guests from around the world who, day after day, visit us and rate our reception and treatment of them and, while touring the museum, learn the history of the Palace, furniture and land connected to it.”

The Vice Regal Palace of the Alcázar de Colón Museum is in Plaza España, in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The construction of this majestic building began in late 1510. By 1512 it was inhabited by the family of Diego Columbus, then Viceroy of India, the third Spanish governor and son of Admiral Christopher Columbus, discoverer of America.

The Alcázar de Colón is a rectangular, two-level building. The main staircase is large and u-shaped. The building has two other staircases – one snail-shaped and another, smaller one is on the level where the re-creation of the María de Toledo Chapel is found.

This monument was built with coral stones from the quarries of Santa Barbara. The walls are about 85 centimeters thick and the building covers an area of 1,525 square meters.

Currently the mission of the Alcázar de Colón Museum is research, conservation and to serve as a guide for Dominican and foreign visitors to further understand the history of colonialism in the Dominican Republic.
