A Sustainable Development Watchdog Initiative in the Dominican Republic

Cacú: The Story of a Dominican Turtle that Will Travel the World

Five years ago, Marvin del Cid, a photographer and journalist for Diario Libre – one of the country’s most important dailies – along with marine biologist Omar Shamir Reynoso, documented the initiative of a group of fishermen from Manresa, an underprivileged neighborhood situated southwest of Santo Domingo. The film shows how these fishermen went from being predators of turtle nests to full-fledged turtle conservationists. The end result was the documentary “Cacú: Un cambio por la vida”, (Cacú: A Change for Life) where del Cid and Reynoso decided to bring the true, moving and inspiring story of these fishermen to the world. With the support of GFDD/DREFF, they launched their journey at the DC Environmental Film Festival (DCEFF) and at the United Nations in New York. They have already received invitations from other nations to exhibit the documentary, including from Australia. The documentary will be shown in movie theaters in the Dominican Republic this coming September. Learn more and follow Cacú’s journey at: https://www.facebook.com/documentalcacu/
