Santo Domingo, February 1, 2019 – The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Culture recently announced that its Carnival Office has received information from approximately 40 cities from all over the country that are currently giving the final touches to their Carnival celebrations. All scheduled events will take place during February and March.
Dominican carnival reaches its maximum expression during the National Carnival Parade which will take place on March 3, in Santo Domingo’s scenic seaside boulevard.
This year the parade will honor the city of Puerto Plata, the north coast’s most important city.
Minister of Culture Architect Eduardo Selman has expressed his interest in turning the popular Dominican carnival into an important international tourism attraction.
His goal is to make the National Carnival Parade not only a splendorous activity, but an event where the country’s most popular traditions can be highlighted.
The following Dominican cities will celebrate their particular Carnival parades:
La Vega: This centrally located city will hold five Carnival events in February, including the final parade on February 27.
Santiago: The country’s second largest city has organized several Carnival celebrations for each Sunday in February.
National District: The big Carnival event in Santo Domingo, the capital city, is scheduled for February 24.
Eastern Santo Domingo: The eastern section of the Greater Santo Domingo area will hold its Carnival celebration during the four Sundays in February.
Western Santo Domingo: Its Carnival celebration will be on February 27.
Other provinces throughout the country have announced their Carnival celebration for February 27. The town of Cotui, in the country’s central region, will hold its celebration on February 17.
Although other towns will hold their Carnival activities during the month of February, others have announced their celebrations for March. For example, the north coast city of Puerto Plata will celebrate Carnival on March 9.
