Its performance has been highly linked to general economic cycles experienced by the country. During the macroeconomic crisis of 2003-2004, the trade commerce was significantly affected. The stability enjoyed by the domestic economy after recovering from the crisis has allowed merchants to recover as well. In the year 2005, the trade sector represented more than 10% of total national production, making it without doubt one of the main sectors of the Dominican economy.
