Santo Domingo, August 21, 2018 – The upcoming World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27 throughout the world, will provide a unique opportunity to raise awareness regarding the importance and contributions made by sustainable tourism.
This year, World Tourism Day will highlight the opportunities technological advances can bring to the sustainable tourism sector such as data information, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms. The World Tourism Organization believes that these digital advances and innovations are now part of the response needed to face the challenges presented by the continuous growth in the tourism industry. At the same time, placing greater emphasis in sustainable and responsible measures in the sector.
“Harnessing innovation and digital advances provides tourism with opportunities to improve inclusiveness, local community empowerment and efficient resource management, amongst other objectives within the wider sustainable development agenda”, explained Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization.
The official celebration of World Tourism Day will be held in Budapest, Hungary, a country that has experienced solid growth in its tourism industry thanks to the introduction of innovative and progressive policies, and a commitment by that country to further digital advances.
Other events around the world are scheduled to take place to celebrate this important day.
In this year’s celebration, the semi-finalists of the First World Tourism Organization Tourism Startups will be announced. The contest is sponsored by the Organization and Globalia, with the goal of strengthening new companies that contribute to the sector with innovative ideas that could revolutionize the way we travel and enjoy the tourism industry.
