The traditional cultural event took place on Sunday in Santo Domingo scenic seaside George Washington Boulevard, with the representation of delegations from most of the country’s provinces.
Santo Domingo, March 9, 2020 – The Ministry of Culture and the National Carnival Commission announced the names of the winning floats that participated in the National Carnival Parade 2020, celebrated in Santo Domingo’s seaside boulevard.
More than one hundred floats and carnival participants represented almost all of the country’s 31 provinces and the National District. During the colorful parade thousands lined the seaside boulevard to cheer along the musical and colorful extravaganza.
The members of the jury were Luisa Mateo, Lenin Paulino, Miguel Ángel Pérez, Giseh Cuesta, Fausto Grullón, Ruth Emeterio, Santiago Alonzo, Soraya Guillen and Hannover Regús, headed by Henry Brito.
According to the jurors the first place award was issued to the members of the “San Carlos Scarecrows” troupe, specifically in the “Devils” category. The second place award was received by the members of the “Incomparables from Villa Consuelo” and the third place winners were the members of the “Oriental Evolution” troupe.
In the “Traditional Character” category, first place winners were the “Masqueraders from Barahona;” second place winners were the “Bulls and Civilians from Monte Cristi,” and third place went to the character “Babalú.”
The winners of the “Historical” category were the members of the “Zulu Empire” troupe, the second place award went to “African Blood,” and the third place winners were the members of the “Azua Sugar Town” troupe.
In the “Popular Creativity” category the winners were the “Popular Carnival from Cotui” troupe – a province in the country’s central region; “Massive Destruction in Fantasy and Something More,” and “The Marolas of Danilo de los Santos,” who came in second and third place, respectively. The latter referred to the characters painted by famed Dominican painter Danilo de los Santos.
In the “Fantasy” category, the first place distinction went to the troupe “Fantasy of the Zodiac Signs;” the second place to the “Great Troupe from Villa Consuelo,” and in third place was “Fantasy of a Califé Tradition.”
The “Ali Babá” category winners were “The Pharaohs of Villa Maria,” first place; “Fantasy Creation;” second place, and “Ali Babá and Something More Fantasy,” in third place.
In the “Individual Category” the first place award went to the “Fantasy of a Califé” troupe, followed by second and third place winners “The Pharaoh” and “Fantasy of a White Wanderer,” respectively.
The “Masque Category” awards went to the “San Carlos Devil” followed by “Captain’s Swines from Santiago and to “Constanza,” respectively.
Awards to Winning Troupes
The first place winners in the Fantasy, Traditional, Historical, Popular Creativity, Devils and Ali Babá categories received awards equivalent to US$2,000 (first place); US$1,500 (second place); and US$1,000 to the first place winners.
In the Individual Character category, the first place winner received an equivalent of US$1,500; the second place winner received US$1,000 and third place winners received US$500. In Carnival Masks, winners received US$1,000, US$500 and US$300.
The total amount distributed among the winners was approximately US$7,000.
Carnival Queen, Dominican television personality Pamela Sued, along with Carnival King, cultural promoter, Luis Roberto Torres (Chachón) opened the annual Carnival parade which, as each year, was transmitted live to viewers in the D.R. and the United States, and by the Ministry of Culture’s social media outlets.
Minister of Culture, Eduardo Selman, presided the VIP area, accompanied by dozens of officials and other invited guests.
