Dance Troupes from 18 school regions and districts participated in the national event.
Santo Domingo, March 10, 2020 – Minister of Education Antonio Peña Mirabal recently headed the National School Carnival Festival Gala, an initiative whose goal was to highlight the teaching-learning process students undergo in local schools. Through the Festival Gala the students were able to rescue and project the country’s customs, history and cultural values.
The event was organized by the Ministry’s Cultural Directorate. Through their participation students presented Carnival traditions from their respective communities. In total, the Ministry administers seven thousand schools at the national level.
The event is eagerly awaited by all students, teachers and the educational community as a whole. It was held in the Santo Domingo Barceló Hotel, one of Santo Domingo’s most traditional venues.
The Ministry’s Cultural Director, Sarah Merán, highlighted during her introductory remarks that the most impacting dance troupes from the 18 educational regions would perform. She explained that it is the way the system celebrates the country’s Festival tradition.
“This great school Carnival gala event has, as one of its main goals, to bring together the students and their respective educational communities,” stated Ms. Merán.
The Ministry official also explained the efforts carried out by Minister Peña Mirabal to make sure the event was a true success. “[The Minister] knows very well that, with these kinds of events, people are able to enjoy our culture and be educated at the same time, thus following the vision, mission and values supported by the Ministry.”
The Gala Event complies with a Constitutional mandate and the National Development Strategy, which is to sponsor events that will guarantee that today’s students be the country’s future leaders and be well in-tune with their national identity.
