Washington, DC. – Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) hosted a meet and greet with a group of Dominican artisans visiting Washington, D.C. The group, which includes members of the Federación Dominicana de Artesanos, came to the U.S. capital to participate in the “Around the World Embassy Tour” (PassportDC) and an Arts & Crafts Bazaar also organized by GFDD with the Dominican Embassy in D.C.
Pedro Castro, Santiago Espinal, Julián Rodríguez, Ramón de la Rosa, Wandy Valdez, Maribel Ramírez, Elizabeth Linares, José Antonio Carmona, Abel Castillo, Pedro Sena and José Torres were among those present. They work on precious woods, larimar and amber, and natural materials to make handmade arts and crafts.
Gretchen Pockels, Cultural Attaché of the Dominican Embassy, as well as Semiramis de Miranda, GFDD’s ICT and Projects Director, and Maria Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s International Affairs and Socioeconomic Development Program Manager, guided the conversation.
Following a presentation of GFDD’s DominicanaOnline portal and a discussion on the opportunity to expand the relationship with the artisans through that platform, De Miranda gave a copy of GFDD’s publication “All Things Dominican” to each visitor as a gift.
The event was an initiative of GFDD with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, D.C.
