Santo Domingo, D.R. – As it has done each year, the website Dominicanaonline.org continues to provide visitors with updated information on the Dominican Republic. And this year has not been the exception.
During this year’s first quarter Dominicanaonline.org has worked to strengthen the institutional ties with contributing organizations to provide viewers with high-quality information.
During the first four months of the year Dominicanaonline.org also carried out different activities and introduced new initiatives, such as:
(January-March 2019): The website began to prepare short radio capsules on the Dominican Republic. The information is available at:
https://www.dominicanaonline.org/dia-de-la-independencia-nacional-y-dia-de-la-bandera/
(February 2019): Exhibited short documentaries to students and teachers at Saint Joseph School on the Dominican carnival, mining of the Larimar stone and jewelry production in the D.R., and the art of making Dominican coconut sticks, one of the country’s most popular treats.
The Dominicanaonline.org team also participated actively in the recently held XXII International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2019, held in the capital city’s Colonial Zone from April 26 to May 5.
During the Fair, the website – working together with the “Cinemateca Dominicana” (Dominican Film Institute) and the BanReservas Cultural Center – also exhibited various documentaries on Dominican culture. After watching the videos, Dominicanaonline.org team member Reydi Moreta headed discussion sessions with the viewers. The following were the shorts exhibited:
“Dominicans You Should Know”
“Las cachúas de Cabral” (on the Dominican carnival celebration in the country’s southwest region)
“El Larimar: de la mina a la joyería” (on the mining of Larimar and the process used to make fine jewelry with the stone)
“Palito de Coco” (on the making of Dominican coconut sticks, a favorite Dominican dessert)
“Salga el mal y entre el bien – Liborio Mateo, la historia” (documentary on Liborio Mateo, a Dominican who in the early 20th century fought against the U.S. occupation)
“Habichuelas con dulce” (on the making of Sweet Beans, another traditional Dominican dessert)
“Comida típica en la playa de Boca Chica” (Favorite dishes that have made Boca Chica beach, situated outside of Santo Domingo, famous)
The newly designed website was launched at the Funglode stand during the Book Fair. In one single day some 350 visitors – including, teachers, students, parents and visitors in general – attended various discussion sessions to explain the redesign of the website.
Another event during the Fair was the opening of the photo exhibit “Lo Dominicano” (All Things Dominican, unofficial translation), at the Juan Bosch Library, situated in Funglode’s main offices in Santo Domingo. The exhibit features some of the photographs that appear in the book.
The goal of Dominicanaonline.org is to provide viewers with pertinent and updated information on Dominican history, culture, geography, folklore and other local traditions. Also, the website provides basic information on the country to the general public and international visitors.
