Santo Domingo, October 3, 2018 – The Spanish Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the Spanish Cultural Center and the General Film Directorate (DGCINE), through the Cinemateca Dominicana and with the support of the Dominican Global Film Festival will present classic films to honor Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel, between October 11-15, and Short Spanish Films, from October 17-25. The events will be part of the agenda to celebrate the sixth annual Spanish Weeks in the Dominican Republic.
The films will be exhibited at the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE) in Santo Domingo.
The Spanish Weeks will be held from October 9 through November 27. The cultural event will also include cultural, academic and social activities that will highlight the permanent ties that bring together both nations.
DGCINE is part of more than 20 public and private entities that support the Cinemateca Dominicana. In this particular case, the Film Institute is sponsoring two cycles of Spanish films.
The first cycle, titled Luis Buñuel, Clásico Universal, will take place between October 11-15. The opening will feature the Spanish filmmaker’s award-winning film Viridiana (1961), a story that reveals the life of Jaime (played by actor Fernando Rey), an elderly Spanish gentleman who is retired and lives alone in his farm after the death of his wife, who died on the same day of their wedding. One day he receives the visit of his niece Viridiana (played by actress Silvia Pinal), a novice in a convent who has a striking resemblance to his wife.
The second cycle – España en Cortos – will take place October 17-23 where a fine selection of Spanish short films, produced during the last decade, will be exhibited.
All films will be shown at the FUNGLODE auditorium and entrance to the film festival is free of charge.
