Santo Domingo, August 1, 2019 – The Dominican Ministry of Education honored on Wednesday, July 31, the 36 students who won the Math, Spelling and Reading Olympics. The event encourages students from public and private schools from all over the country to compete in the much awaited annual academic Olympics.
This year the winners of the first places in Categories A, B, C and D received laptops, trophies, medals and Certificates of Participation. The students who won first and second places in their respective categories obtained the same prizes. The only exception than rather than receive laptops, the winners received Tablets.
Of the 36 students distinguished during the event, 21 are from public schools and 15 from private schools. The city of Santiago, the Dominican Republic’s second largest city, had the largest number of winners with a total of nine participating students.
The head of the Ministry’s General Directorate of Curricula, José Rafael Remigio García, congratulated the winners and encouraged them to continue with their study habits, especially in reading. He explained that it is through reading that most individuals acquire knowledge.
“It pleases me to recognize the merits you have accomplished since your first years in school, and during this entire process. But again, I encourage you to continue devoting time to reading,” he explained.
At the same time the Coordinator of the Office of Impact Programs, Ligia Henríquez, explained that the students are examples that everyone should follow and encouraged them to continue supporting their fellow students in their studies.
Ydelsis Francisco Morel Jiménez, General Director of High Schools, explained that her Office was highly pleased that through these initiatives students can be so positively impacted. She reminded them that they are the representatives of their families, fellow students, teachers and the technical team that supports them.
The Winners
In the Spelling Category (A), the winners were: Zairah Margarita Romero Mejía (Santo Domingo/First Place); Mia Espinal Olivares (Santiago/Second Place); and María del Carmen Butler Jacobo (Santiago/Third Place).
In the B Category, the distinguished winners were Diego Arturo Méndez
(Santiago/First Place); Camila Molina Méndez (Santo Domingo/Second Place); and Moisés de Jesús Almonte Reyes (Puerto Plata/Third Place).
In the C Category, the winners were Isamar Marte Núñez (Santo Domingo); Marian Urbáez Herasme (Neiba) and Amelia Nicole Martínez Ramírez (Santiago). In the D Category (Spelling), the winners were Camile Infante Vargas (Santiago); Arleni Steacy Beltrán (Puerto Plata) and Marjorie Crystal Viloria (Cotuí).
In the Math Olympics, (Category A), the winners were Angélica María Núñez (La Vega/First Place); Víctor Israel Aubee Gómez (Nagua/Second Place) and Seung Woo Lee Jung (Cotuí).
In the B Category: Miguel Ángel Hernández Lora (Santo Domingo); Alina Klyashtórnaya (San Francisco) and Willian Arialvi Espinal Estévez (Mao).
In Category C: Amelia Ysaac Gómez (La Vega); Gleidy Joselin Espinal Hernández (Santo Domingo) and Enmanuel Solano (San Francisco de Macorís).
In Category D: Franco Almonte Bacci (Santo Domingo); Camile Infante Vargas (Santiago) and Vladislav Ryabinin Olegovich (Nagua).
The winners of the XXII Reading Olympics were Abril Valentina Ceuz Guerra (Santiago/First Place); Arline Antonia Acevedo Paulino (Santiago/Second Place); and Yaneiri Alexandra Pérez (Montecrist/Third Place).
In Category B: Esmery Altagracia Vásquez García (Puerto Plata); Nasly Aquino Familia (San Juan); and Raymond Liriano Faña (Nagua).
In this category other distinguished students were Nathalia Mariel Vásquez Lockward (Puerto Plata); Johan Manuel Peña Monegro (La Vega); and Rodolfo Claudio Vásquez Padilla (Montecristi).
In Category D: Annel Moscoso (La Vega); Ana Rodríguez Rodríguez (Santiago); and Alex Moisés Orozco (San Juan).
The award ceremony was held at the Ricardo Michel Auditorium, in the Economics Building of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
Representatives from the Ministry of Education also participated in the event.
