New District Prosecutor’s Office Building Opened in Capital

As of yesterday, employees of the Prosecutor’s Office of the National District have new offices in a modern building in the nation’s capital. Cost of the new building was 87 million pesos. The new building will house various investigation departments of the Prosecutor’s crime units. Dominican Vice-President, Rafael Alburquerque, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the new building and formally announced that it is up and running, according to a press release from the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

Chief Prosecutor of the National District, Dr. José Manuel Hernández Peguero announced that crime units investigating falsifications, crimes and offenses against property as well as crimes and offenses involving drug trafficking and consumption will be carried out in this new building.

Hernández Peguero said there will be 27 adjunct prosecutors and administrative personnel located on these premises as well as an office to control the probation and parole of those charged with crimes and who have to make regular and controlled court-ordered appearances.  

Mr. Hernández Peguero thanked Dominican President Leonel Fernández for the support the federal government has shown in improving the justice system, helping the country confront the “vertiginous rise“ in crime.

Chief Prosecutor, Hernández Peguero, said the new facilities also satisfy the obligation of the country’s justice system to care for the victims of crime in a dignified manner as well as a safe and comfortable atmosphere.

He pointed out that the accumulated experience gathered in the past four years since the adoption of the new penal process, has revealed the necessary changes that lawmakers should be aware of and which contribute to a decline in the criminal activity that threatens the peaceful existence of the country’s population.   

Present at the inauguration of the new offices of Prosecutor of the National District, in addition to the VP, was Dominican Prosecutor General, Radhamés Jiménez and Luis Manuel Bonetti, Administrative Secretary to the President.

The building, formally presented by the Minister of Public Works and Communication, was blessed by Father Benito Angeles of the Saint Anthony of Padua Parrish of Gazcue.   

The Minister of Public Works, Víctor Díaz Rúa, was represented by the Engineer Claudia Franchesca de los Santos at the inauguration ceremony.
