DR Could Use United Nations Model in its Academic Programs The Dominican Republic may choose to include the United Nations model in its academic programs so that students can develop competency in such important areas as conservation, environmental protection and conflict management and solutions. “It is to be able to guarantee social equality, access to education and other indispensable services to all citizens,” said the Dominican leader at a meeting with the Association of the United Nations of the United States. This possibility was announced by the president of the Association of United Nations from the United States, Ambassador William H. Luers in a meeting with President Leonel Fernández. He expressed a desire to reach an agreement between the organization and the Dominican government to begin the training process for Dominican teachers in these areas, according to the President’s Office. President Fernández explained that his government is committed to the process of transformation necessary for its development. He stressed that the Dominican government is working to strengthen the democratic system, which he called a challenge, adding that democracy is much more than just holding elections every four years. “It is to be able to guarantee social equality, access to education and other indispensable services to all citizens,” said the Dominican leader at a meeting with the Association of the United Nations of the United States. President Fernández said the Dominican Republic has advanced in terms of reform and is moving toward a change in its production model as the country promotes cutting edge technology, develops its agricultural industry and diversifies its tourism offerings. He said that education is essential for the country to be able to meet its goals. Following the meeting, President Fernández met with students and staff of New York University´s (NYU) School of Business with whom he exchanged ideas about how to take advantage of the university´s experience in order to improve the academic curriculum of Dominican students in business schools or business sector. With this goal in mind, the Dominican government reached an agreement with the NYU School of Business, signed by the Engineer Eddy Martínez, Director of Export and Investment in the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD) which establishes academic collaboration and exchange between NYU and various Dominican universities.
