Mayor David Cicilline To Officially Welcome The DANR 11th Annual National Conference To The City of Providence, RI The Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR) is pleased to announce that David Cicilline, Mayor of the city of Providence, Rhode Island will give the official welcome address at the DANR 11th Annual National Conference. He will address the conference participants during the Opening Reception which will be hosted at Providence City Hall on Friday, October 10. “Mayor David Cicilline has been a great friend to the Dominican community in the City of Providence as well as beyond Rhode Island’s borders,” “Mayor David Cicilline has been a great friend to the Dominican community in the City of Providence as well as beyond Rhode Island’s borders,” said Victor Capellan, National President of the DANR. “We would like to thank him for officially welcoming our conference participants with open arms to the City of Providence and we are privileged to have him address our national gathering of Dominican Americans.” David Cicilline was elected Mayor of Providence in 2002. His popularity is best measured by the fact that he was re-elected in 2007 with a commanding 83% of the vote. Prior to being elected mayor, he was a State Representative for the Providence’s East Side. Prior to the launch of his political career, he was attorney practicing criminal defense and civil rights law. He served as a public defender in Washington, D.C. after graduating from Georgetown University’s Law Center before returning home to Providence.
In August 2003, Mayor Cicilline signed a sister-city agreement with the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He also was among the driving forces behind the creation of Juan Pablo Duarte Park as well as renaming a portion of Broad Street as Juan Pablo Duarte Blvd., both named after the founding father of the Dominican Republic. This made Providence one of only a few cities in the U.S. with both a park and a street named after Juan Pablo Duarte.
