Five Weekly Non-Stop Flights From Russia to Dominican Republic Two of the major Russian airlines will increase their weekly non-stop flights from two to five between Moscow and St. Petersburg starting this winter and spring. This new schedule will increase the flow of Russian tourists to the Dominican Republic by 100%. Thanks to this fact, it is projected that some 65,000 Russian visitors will visit out country before the year ends, pushing the figures up 120% higher than last year when the number of visitors totaled 31,000. This information was released by Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García at a press conference in this city after his meeting with Russian Tourism Minister Anatoy Yorochkin and the president of Rossya Airlines, Vladimir Bonderev. Dominican Tourism Minister García spoke on the occasion of the XIV International Tourism Fair and Otdykh-Leisure Trips being held in this city. Thanks to this fact, it is projected that some 65,000 Russian visitors will visit out country before the year ends, pushing the figures up 120% higher than last year when the number of visitors totaled 31,000. Mr. García said the added flights from Russia to the Dominican Republic will allow for “visitors from such places as the Russian regions of the Ural Mountains or Siberia.” “The operation of Rossya to Puerto Plata in March is an important achievement. It is part of the joint measures adopted by the Ministry of Tourism for the re-launching of Puerto Plata following large investments in improving the infrastructure of this tourism area,” said the Dominican Minister. Also participating in the press conference with the Dominican Tourism Minister was the Dominican Ambassador to Russia, Jorge Luis Pérez Alvarado; the deputy minister of Tourism for the Northern Region, César José de los Santos; assistant to the Minister, Gabriel Rodríguez and the directors of the Tourism Promotion Offices for Europe and Russia, Petra Cruz and Galina Lyssenko, respectively. Between January and June of this year, 24,994 Russians have visited the Dominican Republic, up 67% from the same time period last year when 14,964 Russians had been to the DR. During his stay here, García will meet with five tour operators who will be working the Transaero route to the Dominican Republic. Last May, the airline´s first jumbo Boeing 747-400, with 350 passenger capacity, landed in Punta Cana.
