Alfaguara to Present Rey Andújar’s “Candela” in Santiago and Several Universities Writer Rey Andújar is coming to the Dominican Republic this week, invited by Alfaguara Publishing to present “Candela” at three universities in Santo Domingo and in Santiago de los Caballeros. In the latter city, the activity will take place on Thursday October 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center. Luis Córdova will present the book. In addition, Mr. Andújar will hold several meetings with humanities students of the UASD, the UNIBE and the O&M. This novel, launched last February, is already in its second printing which represents more than 2,000 sold copies. In the coming months the author will travel to universities in Chicago, North Carolina and New York to lead seminars on his book and to hold discussion with students in Spanish. The novel is about a police investigation being carried out by Lieutenant Imanol Petafunte without the consent of his superiors. He is trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the violent death of Renato Castratte. In the background, a steady rain is falling on Santo Domingo, warning the approach of yet another hurricane. The prose of this novel oscillates between a provocative tone, a lyrical slope, black humor and social criticism. Rey Andújar (Santo Domingo, 1977) is the author of El Hombre Triángulo (2005) and a collection of short stories called Amoricidio (FIL National Short Story Award, 2007) and El factor carne (2005). He has received numerous awards including: The Central Bank Award, the Theater House International Short Story Award and the Cibaeña Alliance Short Story Prize. His story “The Blood of Philippe” appeared in the following anthologies Pequeñas resistencias, New North American and Caribbean Stories, published in Spain.
