More than 200 charter flights full of tourists from Canada will be arriving in our country during the winter period which runs from November to May, according to the Dominican Office of Tourism Promotion (OPT) in Montreal. The trips are organized by the main tour operators who manage the Dominican market. Among them are Air Transat, which has the largest number of flights, and Air Canada, Thomas Cook and Sunwing. They will be organizing the trips for the end of November through May 2009. More than 130 flights are expected from the Ontario region and Western Canada while another 100 flights will travel from Quebec and the Atlantic. Of the scheduled flights, 99 are destined for Punta Cana, 71 for Puerta Plata, 12 for La Romana, 10 for Samaná and 5 for Santo Domingo. Between January and December 2008, 497,523 Canadian tourists visited the Dominican Republic. Canada is currently our second most important market, after the United States. “To reinforce this growth, our offices in Montreal and Toronto will continue to promote our country, participating in events directed to the general public and professionals such as to the golf and fishing aficionados as well as those looking for a lovely place for a wedding. We will continue to be involved with the baby-boom demographic, ecotourism and incentive groups so that each of these groups continue to contribute to the growth of our market as a tourist destination,” according to an OPT press release from the Montreal office under its Director Susana Rosa. Survey about Dominican Tourism Sites Ms. Rosa said the Canadian paper, Express Voyages, a travel and tourism publication, did a survey about the Dominican Republic which revealed that 75% of foreign visitors prefer the Punta Cana area as the place to spend their vacations. The survey indicated that 16% of those interviewed opted for Samaná and 6% for La Romana. | ||
