Institutions Unite to Strengthen Biotechnology Research in Dominican Republic “Strengthening the Institutional and National Capacities for Biotechnology and Bio-Security,” is the name of the project recently launched by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology and Industry (IIDI), the Dominican Environment and Natural Resources Ministry (SEMARENA) and the Center for Agricultural and Forestry Development (CEDAF). The project seeks to promote the safe use of biotechnology in the agricultural sector and strengthen the national system of bio-security… The project seeks to promote the safe use of biotechnology in the agricultural sector and strengthen the national system of bio-security by encouraging better use of natural resources and the productive potential of the country. This project is directed toward technicians, teachers and researchers. It is also intended to work on the detection of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Chemical Tracers with the purpose of providing the DR with the adequate technology for the generation, validation, application and transfer capabilities of biotechnology agriculture and the management of bio-security. With these actions, the FAO, IIBI, SEMARENA and the CEDAF are seeking to strengthen to scientific and technical capacities of the research institutions for the reproduction, ratification and transmission of the agricultural biotechnology. The plan, which will take place over the course of 18 months, seeks to provide the Dominican Republic with the basic elements necessary to diffuse, monitor and strengthen all aspects relative to biotechnology and bio-security. | ||
