Dominican Artist Exhibits the World’s Largest Painting in Miami’s Art Basel Dominican painter Félix Suriel exhibited the world’s largest painting, “The Color of Life” at Art Basel Miami Beach, which also happens to be the biggest modern art fair in the world. “The Color of Life,” dedicated to the environment, was shown on the grounds of the Tozzi Gallery where it formed a labyrinth of colors over a 25,000-square-foot area. Suriel’s painting is catalogued at 187 meters long (the length of two football fields) and is made up of 729 different and consecutive paintings. Suriel, who has lived in Miami for the past 12 years, said he started the piece in the year 2005 and finished it in 2008. “We´re inspired by everything related to the environment,” said the Dominican artist whose colorful painting was greatly admired by gallery-goers as a unique manifestation of art. Suriel plans to enter his painting into the book of Guinness World Records as the longest painting in the world done by a single artist working on his own. The exhibition, part of Art Basel Miami Beach, was organized by Dominican Alan Solís´s Urban Icon Studio; the Tozzi Gallery owned by Italian-Venezuelan Gino Tozzi, and Costa Rican Esteban Guevara. About Félix Suriel Félix was born in the Dominican city of La Vega Real where, since his childhood, he studied art at the School of Fine Arts. With several art exhibitions, individual as well as group shows, Félix became the unofficial but honorable ambassador of Dominican art. He currently lives in Miami, Florida where his paintings on canvas seek to capture the color of music. For the past year, he has been representing the Dominican Republic through this art with an activity called “Cultural Fridays,” in Miami´s popular “Calle 8“ (8th Street) where he shows his work on the last Friday of every month. Initiated in Switzerland by art collector and patron Ernst Beyeler in 1968, Art Basel is celebrating its 40th year in Europe. But the reach of this event is not limited to Basel. Indeed in 2001, the event crossed the ocean and opened its doors along the beaches of Miami. Today Art Basel Miami Beach has become the major artistic event among prestigious artists, collectors, and enthusiasts connected to the art world from the United States and, by extension, the entire American continent. Its success and popularity has generated the birth of Design Miami Basel and other smaller designer fairs. All of this has turned Miami into the artistic capital of the hemisphere, thanks to a Swiss initiative.
