Santo Domingo to Host the VI Gran Prix of the Atlantic

Santo Domingo will be conquered once again by seafarers from Spain. But this time, it is not spices nor gold they are seeking but rather the VI Gran Prix of the Atlantic that will culminate on our coasts in January, 2010.

Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García, thanked the event organizers (Nautical Diffusion and the Skipper Nautical Club) for choosing the Dominican capital as the headquarters for the traditional nautical event that each year attracts the attention of sailing tourism enthusiasts around the world.

In a memo to Enrique Curt, Director of Nautical Diffusion, the Minister reaffirmed the collaboration of the Tourism Ministry (SECTUR) in organizing the logistics necessary for the event’s success. He noted that it will surely bring “opportunities for promotion and development” our way in the area of tourism in that the DR is an attractive sailors’ destination, according to the Tourism Ministry.

The VI Gran Prix of the Atlantic Cádiz–Santo Domingo 2010, is already provoking a great deal of interest on an international scale. One can attest to that by looking: www.granprixdelatlantico.com which is the specialized website of the magazine SKIPPER and circulates on multiple portals over the Internet.

The previous destination of the Gran Prix of the Atlantic – Cadiz was the island of Martinique and enjoyed massive participation from sailors whose boats covered the high seas for some 3,200 miles.

Other editions of the classic sailing race have been from Cadiz to Puerto Rico (1996), Cadiz-Havana (2001), Cadiz-Santo Domingo (2003) and Sotogrande to Martinique (2006).
