President Fernández Participates in the Opening of the Summit of the Americas President Leonel Fernández arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday to attend the 5th Summit of the Americas. He was met by the Defense Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Martin Joseph. In his speech, President Obama said the United States is in its best moment to relate to the countries of Latin America. Minutes later the Dominican leader was taken to the Hyatt Hotel where he held an informal meeting in a private hall with the rest of the attending presidents. Later President Fernández and the rest of the heads of state attended the opening ceremony of the Summit of the Americas and the United States, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity. The opening speech was given by Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, in that her country was the host of the last Summit of the Americas. After President Kirchner, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega spoke. He was followed by the Prime Minister of Belize, Said Musa then US President Barack Obama. In his speech, President Obama said the United States is in its best moment to relate to the countries of Latin America. He said his administration is in a position and is prepared to change the policies that have been maintained, up to now, with Latin America, including Cuba. The inaugural ceremony of the 5th Summit of the Americas ended with a speech from the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning, who said the region’s countries, especially the smaller ones, need to make an effort to face the economic crisis.
