The new books, in various genres, were printed by the publishing units of the Ministry of Culture for the Book Fair, opening in April


A total of 23 books will be presented at the XII International Book Fair as part of an intense program underway by the publishing units of the Ministry of Culture (SEC) since 2004.


A total of 23 books will be presented at the XII International Book Fair as part of an intense program underway by the publishing units of the Ministry of Culture (SEC) since 2004.


Ferilibro Publishing, which began operating in 1997 when the recent book fairs began, will present the following publications:



  • Coloquios 2008 (speeches from the colloquium series at last year’s Book Fair).
  • “Esta ciudad ha sido tomada por las piedras” by Alejandro González (Winner of the International Youth Poetry Prize at the Book Fair in 2008). [“The City Has Been Overrun by Stones”]
  • “Me persiguen” by Paul Alonso (International Youth Short Story Prize at the Book Fair in 2008) [“I’m Being Followed”]
  • “Stories” by Juan Bosch (Traditional collection of stories by the author who is being honored at this year’s Book Fair).
  • “Stories” by Juan Bosch (Popular, widely-read version).
  • “Recuentos” by Arturo Rodríguez Fernández (Complete collection of stories by the well-known narrator and film critic). This collection was started in the previous years with Iván García (2006), Pedro Peix (2007) and René Rodríguez Soriano (2008).
  • Dienteleche 2009. (Collection of children’s stories from Cuba and the Dominican Republic, begun in 1998 with an agreement between the Publishers Union and the Union of Artists and Writers of Cuba UNEAC).
  • “The Glitter of Rage. Dominican Stories of Murderous Lovers” by Frank Martínez. (Anthology co-published by Ferilibro with the Letra Negra Publishers of Guatemala).

The National Publishers will publish the following books:



  • “Receipts and Other Papers” by Luis Manuel Ledesma. (Poetry from this well-received poet who went many years without publishing his work after having moved to the United States). Anthology.
  • “The Dominican Immigrant Women in Search of Equality” by Antonio E. Méndez. (Essayist and winner of the Ultramar Letters Prize sponsored by the Dominican Cultural Commission in the United States). Ultramar collection.
  • “Flowing from the Pen,” collection of essays by León David. Dominican Thought Collection.
  • “5 Stories” by Juan Bosch for Young people. Children and adolescent collection.
  • “Three Children’s Stories” by Juan Bosch. Children and adolescent collection.

Ministry of Culture Publications will present its new books:



  • “Orpheus’ Masks”. Brazilian and Dominican. Contains a selection and presentation by Brazilian poet Floriano Martins and Dominican poet Basilio Belliard.
  • “Anthology of Dominican Children’s Stories” Selection by Eleanor Grimaldi Silié.
  • “Anthology of Dominican Stories” French edition. Selection by René Rodríguez Soriano translated by André Charland.
  • “The Tower of Panoramas” Critical essays on Dominican writers by Carlos Ardavín.
  • “Masks and Identity: Images from the Dominican Carnival,” by Dagoberto Tejeda.
  • “Cabral, A Poet in America,” by the Argentine writer Manuel Ugarte. The book, published in 1955 in Buenos Aires, is about the work of the poet Manuel del Cabral, and has never before been published in Santo Domingo.

Finally, Angeles de Fierro, a non-profit Publisher which receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture to publish the books of writers from the country’s provinces, will present the following poetry texts from young writers:



  • “Room No. 5: A Short Film in Color” by Sabrina Martínez.
  • “Light of Jasmine” by César Barroso.
  • “Dialogue with the City” by Juan Olivo.
  • “Slobbering from Purgatory” by Carlos José Reyes.

With the exception of Manuel Ugarte’s book of about Manuel del Cabral’s poetry, to be presented on April 7, all the rest of the books will be presented at a joint activity prior to the Book Fair, on April 15 at the Ramón Oviedo Art Gallery of the SEC at 6:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Later at the Book Fair, each one will be presented individually.


The National Publisher is directed by the poet León Félix Batista. Ferilibro Editions is directed by the writer Pedro Antonio Valdéz and SEC Editions is run by the poet Basilio Belliard. French-Dominican poet Noé Zayas is the editor of Angeles de Fierro.


The XII International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2009 will be held from Monday April 20 until Saturday May 3 in the Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. This year’s Fair will be dedicated to Juan Bosch on the centenary of his birth. Brazil is this year’s special guest of honor.
