New Children’s Library: A Space for Learning, Recreation and Reading The Office of the First Lady of the Dominican Republic (DPD) has opened the Dominican Republic Library for Children and Adolescents: a space for learning, research and reading enjoyment. The library also offers other activities such as music, theater, puppet shows, illustration and film about children and young people from all corners of the world. With use of the latest technology, children and teens can get lost in the wonderful world of books. The Library for Children and Adolescents is a modern place to explore, stimulate and to satisfy curiosity. This library is a space of cheerful halls and rooms full of storybooks, fairytales, short stories, contests, workshops, films, reading and writing clubs, illustration and film classes and computers. The library is designed for children to do their homework or to just enjoy some verses from a love poem or an adventure novel, said the office of Communications Coordination of the DPD in a press release. The library also offers other activities such as music, theater, puppet shows, illustration and film about children and young people from all corners of the world. The library will be a center for continued education through workshops, publications and exhibits all through the year in addition to literary forums and presentations of adolescent stories and poems, round tables and authors’ visits. In contact with international as well as libraries in the DR, it offers information in catalogues and books that are available to the public. Research programs can be done right in the library. Making Reading Fun The Animation in Reading at the Library for Children and Adolescents seeks to develop the reading capacity in children and teenagers through games and humor and by doing fun things for the youngest ones to make them fall in love with books and awaken in them a lifelong interest in reading. There are many options from which to choose among – books with word games, books with songs and dreams, to laugh and cry, big and small. Books about rainbows, pirates, witches, frogs, bears, dolphins, fear, terror, adventure, geniuses and ingenious ideas, broken hearts and love stories. Activities for the month of May On Thursday May 21 at 5:00 in the afternoon, the Short Story Workshop will begin. It will be given by the writer Reynaldo Disla, winner of the Casa de las Americas Prize. The workshop is directed toward young beginners or for experienced writers who would like to acquire creative tools to write short stories. The workshop stimulates knowledge of the resources and techniques used by the masters of the short story. Collaboration, healthy competition, solidarity and mutual support will be stressed in the workshop. On May 22, the writer Brunilda Contreras will offer two workshops on Riddles and Guessing Games; one is planned for 10:00 am and the other at 4:00 pm. This activity is directed toward children from 7 to 12 years old. The workshops are meant to stimulate literary creativity and to encourage children to use the rhythmic range and levels of their own voices by reading aloud which helps stimulate pronunciation and speech. On Friday, May 29 at 4:00 pm there will be a film appreciation workshop for young people given by film critic Félix Manuel Lora. He will explain the elements of filmmaking so that the students will develop an understanding and certain tools to appreciate the internal mechanisms to better appreciate a film.
