Eight Concerts Planned for Theater House Jazz Festival 2009

At total of eight groups from America and Europe will participate in this year’s musical bill at Theater House Jazz Festival. The event, one of the most important of its kind to be celebrated in Santo Domingo, will take place from June 18 to July 30 at the Theater House (Casa de Teatro) under the auspices of the Dominican National Beer Company.

Groups from Cuba, Argentina, the United States, France, Spain and, of course, the Dominican Republic, will fill the schedule of this musical celebration, now in its tenth year. According to Freddy Ginebra, Director of Theater House, this year the Festival will be dedicated to Guillo Carías, internationally-renown jazz conductor, arranger and trumpet player and resident of the Dominican Republic.

“In addition to the homage and participation by Carías, a living legend of jazz, we will also be welcoming other fantastic international figures. This year, Roberto Carcasse and his trio from Cuba will attend as well as Bryan Lynch, from the US and Paula Shokron and her trio from Argentina. From Europe, we will host Spanish musician Natalia Calderón and the fabulous French Ossia Saxsophons. Accompanying Carías will be our local talent Rafael Mirabal and his Sistema Temperado and Patricia Pereyra,” explained Ginebra.

The event will be held every Thursday throughout June and July beginning June 18. Showtime is 9:00 p.m. in the Cristóbal de Llerena Hall of the Theater House. The shows can also be widely viewed on the big screen at the Theater Café. On Saturday July 4th, there will be a special concert at Bartolomé de las Casas Plaza with Bryan Lynch. Tickets will be on sale at the Theater for 400 pesos for entrance to the theater and 250 for the café.

The Theater House Jazz Festival was born in the year 2000 as a way of supporting the development of Dominican groups and to make jazz available for all to enjoy at an inexpensive price. This Festival also encourages the growth of new Dominican Jazz talent and provides an opportunity to get to know existing jazz musicians. In the ten years of festivals, we have had support from musicians and embassies from countries around the world, including Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, France, Great Britain, the United States, Spain and Venezuela, among others.

The Theater House Jazz Festival of 2009 is being held under the auspices of the Dominican National Beer Company, the Spanish Cultural Center, Banreservas, the Alliance Frances, Brugal & Co., Dewars and the Ministry of Tourism.
