First Showing of Dominican Film in Barcelona Ends to Great Success

More than 3,400 spectators attended the First Showing of Dominican Film in Barcelona which ended last night after three weeks and twenty films, including two documentaries. The Film Showing, organized by the Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Barcelona included filmmakers such as Alfonso Rodríguez, René Fortunato and Archie López.

During the weeklong, three daily sessions, movie theater B of the Verdi Park Cinema Barcelona was full most of the time. The theater’s 218 seats were taken and people often stood in the aisles to watch the films, according to the organizers. The average attendance per session was 174 people (80% of the theater).

The resident Dominican community welcomed the films with great appreciation. Dominican as well as Catalan and other nationalities filled the theaters and in some cases made up half the audience, explained Dominican Consular officers in Barcelona.

“We are very happy and satisfied with the support shown us by the community for this Film Showing. Dominicans attended with great pride and spirit upon seeing films from their country. Many of the local Catalans were also delighted firstly because they didn’t know we had such a rich film industry and, secondly, because of the high quality of work,” said Consul Rocío Pichardo.

Due to the warm and enthusiastic welcome received by the Film Showing, the directors in attendance decided to leave their films with the Consul so that it can hold screenings at different times and places in Catalonia. The Film Showing took place from May 29 to June 4th in coordination with the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE).
