President Fernández to Participate in Petro-Caribe Summit

Dominican President Leonel Fernández, will leave this Friday, June 12, to travel to Saint Kits to participate in the VI Summit of Head of States and Governments who are members of Petrocaribe.

President Fernández will leave at 9:00 a.m. on a private plane from the San Isidro Air Base. He will be accompanied by a committee made up of Secretarial Administrators César Pina Toribio and Luís Manuel Bonetti; Minister of Finance, Vicente Bengoa; Minister of Foreign Relations, Carlos Morales Troncoso, and Presidential Press Director, Rafael Núñez.

Member countries at the meeting will explore different energy options and discuss exchanging crude oil for food, a proposal made by the Dominican Republic as reported the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

As part of the discussions at the Petrocaribe Summit, the Dominican Government will also propose the exchange of tourism services and the sale of next year’s black bean crop as compensation for the delivery of fuel, said Finance Minister Vicente Bengoa.

The Ministerial Petrocaribe Conference was inaugurated on Thursday in the islands of Barlovento, San Cristóbal and Nieves at the Hotel Marriot where the Government Minister of Public Works, Transport and Postal Service, Earl Asim Martin, welcomed the representatives from the member countries. He was joined by Venezuela’s Rafael Ramírez, Minister of Popular Power for Energy and Petroleum.

The technical groups met on their own to discuss advances made in the areas of efficient and renewable fuels, natural gas for the Caribbean, Central America and South America. They discussed training technical and professional teams in the area of energy. They also went over the PDV Caribe Report.

Later at 3:00 in the afternoon, they approved and released their resolutions and discussed the President’s declaration.

President Fernández and his team will return to the San Isidro Air base this same Friday afternoon.
