Max Puig: “DR-CAFTA Has Produced Material Advances for the Dominican Republic” Minister of Labor, Max Puig, clarified that there have been labor advances in the Dominican Republic thanks to the technical cooperation contained in the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic, known as DR-CAFTA. Among others, Puig met with Charles Rangel, Democratic Congressman from New York and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives. Mr. Puig held a series of meetings with representatives and officials from US Congressional districts where the Dominican community has a significant presence. At these meetings, Puig pointed to the Dominican fulfillment of its obligations under the agreement as well as the importance of continuing with the technical cooperation called for by the DR-CAFTA on the part of the DR as well as other signatory countries. As such, the Minister of Labor spoke with congress people about the important contribution made by Dominicans and other minority groups to the communities, cities and states where they reside. They talked about the benefits that can be derived for these groups if the recently announced US immigration policy is implemented. He also stressed how important it is that the upcoming US census specifically documents the minority Latin groups and especially the Dominican immigrants. He said this information can reveal important findings that could benefit the economic development of this community as well as the country that has become their home. Others at the meeting with Minister Max Puig included the Dominican Ambassador in the United States, Roberto Saladín, the deputy Minister of Labor, Andrés Marranzini, and ministry consultants from the Dominican Embassy in the United States, Wellington Bencosme and Edgar Aponte. In addition to Charles Rangel, other congress people received visits including Eliot Engel, Democrat from New York; Howard Berman, Democrat from California; Dan Burton, Republican from Indiana and Joe Crowley, Democrat from New York, among others. The Dominican delegation also visited the offices of Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York; Frank Lautenberg, of New Jersey; Bill Nelson of Florida and Charles Schumer of New York.
