Tourism Promotion Office in Brazil Using Social Networking Sites to Advance Tourism The Dominican Tourism Promotion Office (OPT) in Brazil is joining the world of instant communication and publicity via the Internet and digital connections as it introduces its services and offerings through social networks such as Facebook, Orkut, Twitter and Youtube. “With web 2.0, the virtual world is experiencing a new reality. Social networking sites are letting people see and feel the DR from close-up. It is exactly what we want in our efforts to make the Dominican Republic a preferred destination for the Brazilian people,” With the tools available on these networking sites, Brazilian tourists can better get to know the Dominican Republic through photos, videos and exclusive information about this Caribbean paradise, according to the Ministry of Tourism. On Orkut, for example, in addition to photos, tourists who have already visited the DR can post albums of their own pictures along with blogs of their experiences. This site is called “I Visited the Dominican Republic.” Twitter also offers a blogging service in which travelers can get news from the DR as well as plan their trip there. Nodalia Arias, Dominican Tourism Promotion assistant in Brazil, says that the creation of these social networking sites gives the potential Brazilian tourist easy access to information about visiting the DR. “With web 2.0, the virtual world is experiencing a new reality. Social networking sites are letting people see and feel the DR from close-up. It is exactly what we want in our efforts to make the Dominican Republic a preferred destination for the Brazilian people,” said Ms. Arias.
