Dominican and Libyan Governments Establish Diplomatic Relations

The governments of the Dominican Republic and Libya have agreed to establish formal diplomatic relations and have designated the way forward to set up diplomatic missions in Tripoli and Santo Domingo, announced Dominican Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso.

“In less than one month, the Dominican and Libyan governments will appoint ambassadors to their respective capitals in a move that will continue to strengthen Dominican presence on the African continent,” said the Chancellor.

Morales Troncoso made the announcement at the special session for the consideration and resolution of conflicts of the African Union, currently underway in Addis Ababa and attended by nearly 50 presidents, heads of state and princes from the continent of Africa, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

The memorandum of understanding between the Libyan and Dominican governments establishes bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economy, commerce, science and culture, explained Morales Troncoso who emphasized that the Dominican Republic is strategically important due to its geographic situation. He noted that the agreement will further relations and cooperation between the African Union and the Caribbean community as well as strengthen the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries in its search to consolidate South-South cooperation.

“We have agreed to pay attention to international affairs on the global agenda, particularly to the strengthening of peace and international security and the reform of the United Nations Security Council,” said Morales Troncoso

The Dominican Republic and Libya have agreed to establish a mechanism to carry out periodic high level consultations in areas of interest to both countries and to strengthen relations for the protection of the environment.
