Government Begins Dialogue with International Monetary Fund

Last Friday, the government initiated talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), through its mission in the Dominican Republic, with the goal of reaching a new agreement.

Montás pointed out that this first phase consists only of conversations and clarifications about the situation in order to identify what will be presented to the IMF with the idea of reaching a new agreement. He added that the letter of intent will set the tone for new relations between the Dominican government and the IMF.

Members of the IMF mission, headed by Alejandro Santos, met in the National Palace with Juan Temístocles Montás, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

Over the next two week, the mission will be working on the letter of intent which, when complete, will be presented to the Board of the IMF.

Economy Minister Montás said talks underway with the IMF mission should result in a new program to be carried out with the organization.

Chief of Mission, Alejandro Santos, said he believed conditions are optimal to continue negotiations with the Dominican government. He added that he was hopeful conversations with the Dominican leadership would lead to the signing of a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
