Tourism Promotion Office Opening in Scandinavia

The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) announced plans to open an new Tourism Promotion Office (OPT) in Europe, bringing the number of OPT offices outside the Dominican Republic to 22.

Ms. Jiménez said the new OPT will serve Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland and will be undertaking an intense campaign to promote the DR as the best tourism destination in the Caribbean.

This new office will open in Scandinavia and will be led by Ivonne Cocco Jiménez, who worked at OPT offices in Belgium and Germany, according to SECTUR’s Office of Press and Communications.

Ms. Jiménez said the new OPT will serve Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland and will be undertaking an intense campaign to promote the DR as the best tourism destination in the Caribbean.

She said this move is in response to the promotion strategy being undertaken by Tourism Minister > Francisco Javier García, with the goal of securing the DR in this new market.

Cocco Jiménez announced that starting this winter there will be a weekly Stockholm- Samaná flight offered by the tour operator Fritidsresor (TUI Nordic) and a bi-weekly flight between Stockholm and Puerto Plata with tour operator VING (Thomas Cook), which will increase the numbers of Scandinavian visitors to the country.

In related news, Jiménez said producers of the Swedish version of SURVIVOR have chosen the Dominican Republic as a venue and are currently filming in Samaná.

She indicated that the program has some of the highest ratings in Sweden, as a result “our country will have an enormous presence in the minds of travelers and television viewers.”
