New Culture Commissioner Named in United States Carlos Humberto Sánchez Morel was sworn in as the new Culture Commissioner in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture in New York Sánchez, a well-known theater person and cultural activist, called on all artists and cultural groups to present proposals and creative ideas for projects to undertake. Mr. Sánchez enumerated a list of activities he intends to carry out as the Culture Commissioner in the United States. He was sworn in by Alexander Santana Delgado, Administrative Deputy Minister of Culture. Sánchez, a well-known theater person and cultural activist, called on all artists and cultural groups to present proposals and creative ideas for projects to undertake. He said he aspires to produce “an active integration within the Commission’s programs from all sectors who partake in the cultural life of this city.” Those in attendance at the event which filled the Andrés Francisco Requena hall of the Commission, included the Dominican Consul in New York, Rafael Evans who was at the table of honor; Professor Frank Cortorreal, president of the Dominican Liberation Party in New York; alternate Ambassador Isidro Martínez; Francisco Fernández, Secretary of State without Porfolio and León Félix Batista, Director of Editora Nacional. Also present were poets Jorge Piña and Karina Rielke; Félix García, of Trazarte; Lucila Rutinel; writer Dinorah Coronado; Yolany Rodríguez of the Las Tablas Theater; Fernando Ocampo of the Association of Art Chroniclers as well as cultural delegations and various community and political organizations. The Dominican Cultural Commission of the United States, based in New York, was created by Dominican President Leonel Fernández in 2004, with the goal of promoting cultural activity in big cities such as Boston, New Jersey, Miami, Chicago, Washington and others in the United States.
